Protecting our seas: UK leadership in the year of the Global Ocean Treaty - Environment APPG drinks reception

23 February 2026
6:30pm - 8:30pm
Houses of Parliament

The ocean produces half of the planet’s oxygen and supports some of the world’s most biodiverse ecosystems, yet it is under severe pressure from destructive human activity, including overfishing and oil drilling.

On 17th January 2026, the Global Ocean Treaty entered into force, marking an historic turning point for protecting the oceans that more than three billion people depend on directly for their livelihoods. While international cooperation falters elsewhere, the Treaty is a remarkable achievement for multilateralism and protecting our common heritage. It gives
countries the tools to expand ocean protection through marine protected areas beyond their borders.

The UK is now in a race to catch up, with the legislation required to ratify the Treaty still passing through Parliament. The UK must ratify in time to take part in the first Ocean COP expected later this year.

This reception will provide an opportunity to celebrate this turning point and explore how the UK can reassert its international leadership.

Parliamentarians and members of the Environment APPG can RSVP to appg@green-alliance.org.uk to attend.
