Environment APPG hosts marine reception to mark ratification of the Global Ocean Treaty
23 February 2026
Following the ratification of the landmark Global Ocean Treaty in January, which provides the framework to protect a third of oceans worldwide, the Environment APPG hosted a parliamentary marine reception and was joined by parliamentarians, associate members, and the Water Minister in celebrating the Treaty.
At this parliamentary reception, the Environment APPG celebrated the Global Ocean Treaty entering into force on 17th January 2026. The Treaty marks a historic turning point for protecting the oceans that more than three billion people depend on directly for their livelihoods. Meanwhile, the UK's Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) Bill received royal ascent in February 2026 and, if implemented properly, will allow the UK to
ratify the Global Ocean Treaty.
With many members and parliamentary supporters of the Environment APPG having worked hard to reach this point, the reception was an opportunity to celebrate the landmark Global Ocean Treaty and what that will mean for the future health of our seas.
